Operating out of a state-of-the-art manufacturing and R&D headquarters facility in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the organization combines rigorous engineering with proprietary smart-building control platforms, zoning systems, and advanced communicating architecture to deliver industry-leading efficiencies and exceptional environmental performance. Backed by a stable global parent network and a strong reputation for engineering excellence, the company offers a collaborative, family-like yet entrepreneurial mid-sized environment where technical professionals make a direct, tangible impact across the business.

POSITION OVERVIEW & ROLE PURPOSE

The organization is recruiting a customer-facing Field Controls Integration Engineer to join its Commercial Technical Services team within the Commercial Sales group. In this role, you will act as a critical field expert—coordinating, planning, and executing the installation, commissioning, software customization, and system start-up of commercial HVAC equipment directly at customer job sites across North America.

Working with water-to-water heat pumps, air-to-water chillers, water-to-air heat pumps, Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems (DOAS), and commercial rooftop units, you will collaborate with building controls contractors, mechanical engineers, and site technicians to ensure units operate flawlessly within complex customer Building Automation Systems (BAS). The ideal candidate brings strong field start-up and commissioning expertise, visual programming proficiency (Niagara N4 / Automated Logic), and solid customer-facing interpersonal skills.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Field Installation, Start-Up & Commissioning: Coordinate, plan, execute, and oversee start-ups and service of factory-installed system-level controls on commercial water-to-water heat pumps, air-to-water chillers, water-to-air heat pumps, DOAS systems, and rooftop units at customer job sites.

  • Building Automation System (BAS) Integration: Collaborate with building controls contractors, mechanical engineers, and site technicians to integrate equipment and validate seamless operation across BACnet, BACnet/IP, Modbus, and RS-485 infrastructure.

  • Field Software Customization & Programming: Perform visual programming, logic adjustments, and field software customizations utilizing Niagara N4 and Automated Logic (ALC) coding platforms.

  • Customer Support Across Product Lifecycle: Provide technical and application support on new commercial orders, pre-installation reviews, site installation, unit commissioning, and post-installation troubleshooting.

  • R&D & Engineering Feedback Loop: Serve as the direct link between field environments and factory engineering—feeding real-world application data, field requirements, and controls enhancement ideas back to R&D and applications engineering teams.

  • Project Planning & Work Estimation: Assist commercial teams and contractors with project planning by providing accurate work estimates for controls integration and field commissioning efforts.

  • Presales & Simulation Support: Assist commercial sales teams with technical presales support and setup hardware/software simulations (in Fort Wayne or remotely) to prove out complex customer application logic.

REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Field Start-Up & Commissioning Experience: 5+ years of hands-on experience in building automation or chiller/heat pump equipment start-ups and field commissioning.

  • Visual Programming Proficiency: 5+ years of visual programming experience using Niagara N4 (Tridium), Automated Logic (ALC), or similar building automation development platforms.

  • Communication Protocols & Infrastructure: Comprehensive understanding of machine/system controls and communication protocols, including BACnet, BACnet/IP, Modbus, and RS-485 infrastructure.

  • Customer Relations & Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong interpersonal presence, capable of working independently on customer job sites while representing the organization professionally.

  • Self-Starter & Problem Solver: Strong troubleshooting skills with a detail-oriented approach to diagnosing complex mechanical and controls interactions.

  • Work Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future employer visa sponsorship.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent extensive field experience).

  • Certifications: Niagara 4 (N4) Certification and/or Automated Logic (ALC) Certification.

  • Software Discipline: Basic knowledge of coding methodologies and Git software documentation control.

  • HVAC Mechanical Knowledge: Hands-on background with heat pump loops, refrigeration pressure/temperature diagnostics, and hydronic systems.

COMPENSATION, TRAVEL & BENEFITS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Base Compensation: $98,000+ base salary commensurate on experience.

  • Incentive Bonus: Eligible for company-wide annual bonus plan (5% gross pay target based on 10% YoY business growth).
