Human Connection: Beyond AI’s Reach

In the latest episode of HIRED! The Podcast, Travis Miller sits down with Britta Muehlenberg, Chief Operations Officer at Acrolinx. With over two decades of experience in human resources and operations, Britta shares invaluable insights on leadership, the impact of AI, and fostering a thriving workplace culture.

Transitioning from Chief People Officer to Chief Operations Officer

Britta Muehlenberg recently transitioned from Chief People Officer to Chief Operations Officer at Acrolinx, marking her second time in an operations leadership role. Reflecting on this shift, Britta explains that while the transition has broadened her focus, it has also underscored the critical connection between people and operations. In a tech company like Acrolinx, where the most important asset is its people, aligning talent with organizational goals is paramount.

Britta emphasizes, “Being in charge of people and operations goes hand in hand. Ensuring our talent collaborates effectively and creates value for our customers is central to my role.”

AI and the Future of Work

Addressing concerns about AI’s impact on the job market, Britta provides a refreshing perspective. Acrolinx, an AI company for 20 years, integrates AI into its core operations, viewing it as an enabler rather than a threat.

“Organizations are organisms, not engines,” Britta states. “AI will change the way we work, but the need for human leadership, coaching, and communication will remain. The human element is indispensable.”

Britta highlights the importance of leveraging AI for efficiency and productivity while ensuring that models are free of bias. She underscores the role of generative AI in various HR functions, from creating job descriptions to developing learning content, and stresses the need for continuous human oversight to maintain fairness and inclusivity.

Implementing AI in Organizational Processes

Acrolinx utilizes its own AI tools to enhance internal processes, including content creation and customer communication. While AI supports efficiency, Britta acknowledges that integrating AI into workflows requires careful consideration of data protection and bias elimination.

“We’re excited about the potential of AI but also mindful of the risks. As we develop policies and frameworks, our goal is to use AI responsibly and effectively,” Britta explains.

The Role of AI in Learning and Development

Britta discusses the transformative potential of AI in creating and delivering learning content. While AI can streamline knowledge-based training, Britta believes that certain aspects of human interaction, such as empathy and vulnerability, are irreplaceable.

Reflecting on her certification in Brené Brown’s Dare to Lead program, Britta highlights the profound impact of human presence and shared experiences in training. “Training on topics like vulnerability and courage requires human connection. AI can’t replicate the depth of these experiences,” she asserts.

Fostering a Culture of Healthy Conflict

Britta shares insights on creating a culture that embraces healthy conflict. Encouraging direct conversations and addressing issues head-on are key strategies. By promoting clarity and kindness, leaders can facilitate constructive dialogues that drive innovation and resolve conflicts.

“It’s a journey. Encouraging direct conversations and coaching teams to address conflicts head-on helps prevent issues from festering. Clear and kind communication is essential,” Britta notes.

Embracing Transparency and Empathy

Transparency and empathy are central to Britta’s leadership approach. She advocates for leaders to openly share their challenges and successes, creating an environment where team members feel valued and supported.

“Leaders should work for their teams, not the other way around. Creating a safe space where team members can thrive is crucial,” Britta emphasizes.

Engagement in a Remote-First World

Acrolinx’s shift to a remote-first model has highlighted the importance of maintaining social connectivity. Britta discusses the company’s efforts to foster community through various initiatives, from book clubs to activity challenges.

“Maintaining social bonds in a remote setting requires creativity. We provide platforms for employees to connect beyond work, reinforcing our sense of community,” Britta explains.

Measuring Engagement and Purpose

Britta underscores the importance of measuring employee engagement and providing a sense of purpose. Using tools like the Gallup Q12, Acrolinx assesses engagement levels and identifies areas for improvement.

“Engagement is about more than satisfaction. It’s about emotional connection and purpose. Ensuring employees feel valued and understood is vital,” Britta states.
